What a difference straight teeth can make! A great-looking smile can boost your self-confidence and have a positive impact on social and professional opportunities.

Orthodontic treatment is the original smile makeover tool, and you’ll be happy to know you’re never too old to take advantage of it. However, it isn’t all about looks. Properly aligned teeth help you to bite, chew, and even speak more effectively. They are also easier to clean, which helps keep your mouth free of tooth decay and gum disease.

Orthodontic treatment can resolve several bite problems, which often become evident by around age seven. These include:

  • Underbites
  • Crossbites
  • Excessive overbite
  • Crowding and more

Orthodontic appliances can be used to move teeth into their ideal positions and correct bite problems. At Keystone DentistryLearn more about our practice on the homepage, we have a number of orthodontic options ranging from traditional braces to Invisalign®.

Although we recommend early intervention, healthy teeth can be moved at any age, so you’ve never “missed the boat” for orthodontic treatment!

Orthodontics for All Ages

It is never too late to straighten your smile.

Children

By around age seven, most alignment problems have become evident. Interceptive orthodontic treatment can help direct proper tooth positioning and/or jaw growth, eliminating, or simplifying the need for later treatment.

Teenagers

Generally, by the age of 11-13 years, the baby teeth have all been lost, and the permanent ones have largely come in. This is the time when we can start correcting the problems, which cause a bad bite, improper tooth spacing, or poor alignment.

There are more and more adult orthodontic patients these days, and many adults realize that investing in a smile makeover can have significant benefits, both socially and professionally. Straightening teeth can be an essential part of the confidence-boosting makeover process.

For the vast majority of orthodontic patients, wearing fixed braces will be a major part of treatment. But while they’re still quite popular, traditional-looking metal braces are no longer the only game in town! Let’s have a look at some of the options available in orthodontic appliances.

Metal Braces

Typically made of high-grade stainless steel, traditional metal braces remain by far the most common type of fixed orthodontic appliances.

They consist of metal bands that wrap around the molars while smaller metal brackets are cemented to the front surfaces of the other teeth. A thin, springy metal wire, running through the brackets gently guides the teeth into a proper position. This archwire may be fixed to the brackets by flexible elastics, which work with the movement of your jaw.

Clear ceramic braces are a new variation on the traditional system that provides a far less noticeable method of treatment. They use the same components as traditional braces except for the brackets on the front side of the teeth are made of a translucent ceramic material, which blends in with the tooth’s natural color.

This system has become a favorite for adults (including some well-known celebrities) because, unless you look closely, it’s hard to notice they’re there. Several types of ceramic braces are currently available, and the technology is constantly improving.

Six Month Smiles®

Six Months Smiles® is a popular solution for adults with crooked, spaced, or misaligned teeth because of the short treatment time (6 months average!). This method combines the latest digital technology with innovative orthodontics to produce an efficient and effective aligning solution.

Invisalign® & Invisalign Teen®

More discreet, comfortable, and efficient.

Invisalign® clear aligners work the same way traditional braces do by applying carefully controlled forces to teeth to move them into a better position. But they are NOT made of metal. Instead, they are made of clear, flexible plastic. Rather than being cemented or bonded to the teeth as metal or clear braces are, Invisalign® aligners are completely removable. Therefore, you can remove them to eat your favorite foods and carry out your daily hygiene routine.

During the initial consultation, specialized computer software is used to design a plan for moving your teeth into the best possible finalized alignment. This movement will be broken down into several stages (usually every two weeks) using custom-made aligners.

Some other advantages of the Invisalign® system are:

  • Improved oral hygiene
  • A discreet look
  • More dietary choices
  • Comfort
  • Teeth-grinding protection

Clear aligners for adults have been available for over a decade, but until recently they weren’t recommended for teens in most cases. Thanks to modern technology, teenagers can benefit from Invisalign® and enjoy the above benefits.

Today, more people than ever — both adults and teens — are finding that Invisalign® clear aligners suit their needs best.
