What can we do for your smile?
Metal-Free Fillings
Close up of Teeth Fillings

Fillings seal a small hole in your tooth, also known as a cavity. Taking this action prevents the decay (a bacteria-induced infection) from spreading further into your tooth.

The first step in this procedure is a clinical exam of the tooth with x-rays to determine the extent of the decay. Then the decayed area of the tooth is removed. After removing the decay, the remaining tooth structure is roughened or “etched;” then translucent cement is applied to bond the tooth and the filling material together.

There are two categories of dental fillings. The classic metal filling, which is an alloy made up of mercury, silver, tin, and copper. These fillings are strong and inexpensive, but also quite noticeable. Tooth-color fillings (Dr. Kinney’s recommendation) use composite, porcelain, or glass monomer to give a more aesthetic look while bonding to the tooth for more durability.

Crowns and Bridges

A dental crown or “cap” is a covering that fits over a damaged, decayed, or unattractive tooth. Typically crowns will usually take two to three visits. However, at Keystone Dentistry, we offer CEREC® Same-Day crownsGet more information on CEREC, which can be placed in a single visit.

To begin, your tooth is prepared and shaped to fit inside the new covering. After the tooth is prepared, digital impressions of your teeth will be made and viewed on our CAD/CAM software. These impressions will be used to design your crown. The data is then sent to the milling machine for creation.

In addition to protecting a damaged tooth, crowns can be used to create a lifelike replacement for a missing tooth. This is done with bridgework, which spans the space of the missing tooth and requires at least three crowns.

Inlays and Onlays

There are times when a tooth suffers damage too extensive to be treated with a simple filling — but not extensive enough to need a full-coverage crown. In these cases, the best option for restoring the tooth may be an inlay or onlay.

Getting an inlay or onlay is very much like what you would experience having a crown placed. There is one distinction: Less of your natural tooth structure will need to be removed when you receive an inlay or onlay.

Inlays and onlays can be constructed using CEREC®. Dr. KinneyLearn more about our restorative dentist takes digital impressions of your damaged tooth. He then designs the new restoration before it is built in our office’s milling machine. Once ready, the inlay or onlay is placed, adjusted, and bonded to the remaining tooth.

It is considered an “inlay” when it fits within the little points or “cusps” of a back (premolar or molar) tooth. It is an “onlay” if it covers one or more of these cusps. Either way, the procedure for placing an inlay or onlay is the same.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are small titanium posts that replace the roots of missing teeth. They are inserted into your jawbone during a minor surgical procedure that takes place in our dental office.

After your implant has been placed in your jawbone, a completely lifelike porcelain dental crown is attached. In some cases, the implant needs to fuse with the bone for several months before it is permanently crowned. In other cases, you can have new (but temporary) tooth the same day your implants are placed.

You can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all your teeth with implants. Dental implants should last a lifetime with proper care.

Tooth Extractions

Whether it is aimed at preventing future problems or needed to alleviate a condition you already have, the extraction of wisdom teeth is a very common procedure.

It is done right here in our office and it is performed by our extremely prepared and experienced Indianapolis dental teamGet to know our team. Once you have been appropriately anesthetized, the gum tissue at the extraction site may need to be opened if the tooth is impacted. The tooth itself will then be gently removed.

When the extraction is complete and the procedure is over, your recovery period generally lasts only a few days. During this time, you should rest when possible to encourage healing and take any pain medication as prescribed.

Dentures

Full or partial tooth loss doesn’t just affect a person’s self-image. It can also increase the risk of developing nutritional problems and other systemic health disorders.

Full or partial dentures consist of a gum-colored base made of plastic resin, which fits over the remaining bone ridge that formerly held your natural teeth. The prosthetic teeth projecting from the base are designed to look and function just like your natural smile.

Dentures also help support the facial skeleton and the soft tissues of the lips and cheeks, which can help create a more youthful appearance.

Dr. Kinney offers partial dentures for those who only have a few missing teeth. These dentures blend in with your natural teeth and restore the beauty of your smile.

We also other three types of full dentures:

Immediate – helps you transition to denture wearing
Traditional – these are removeable dentures
Implant-supported – attached to dental implants for increased stability and a permanent replacement

Dr. KinneyLearn more about our expert dentist will advise you on the best options for your smile and individual circumstances.

TMJ

If you experience ongoing pain in the area near your ear, your jaw, or the muscles on the side of your face, you may be suffering from a temporomandibular disorder (TMJ).

It is characterized by pain and dysfunction in the TMJ and/or the muscles surrounding it.

Once examined, we can develop a strategy for treating your condition and managing your pain. Sometimes a temporary change to a softer diet can reduce stress on the muscles and joints. Ice and/or moist heat can help relieve soreness and inflammation, as well as gentle stretching exercises. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and muscle relaxants can also provide relief.

Other more complex forms of treatment might include orthodontics, dental restorations, or minor procedures (e.g., cortisone injections or lavage (flushing) of the joint).

Whatever you need, rest assured Dr. Kinney can help guide you in the right direction and is by your side every step of the way.
