Oral Cancer Screening

Did you know that oral and throat cancer is the sixth most common cancer in America, accounting for forty-to-fifty thousand newly diagnosed cancers each year? As part of Keystone Dentistry’s comprehensive care, our skilled dentist performs free oral cancer screening and examinations during your routine check-ups. It’s just one of the many special services that we offer our patients – and one of the reasons why people from all over Indiana choose Keystone Dentistry for their dental care.

Oral cancer often starts as a tiny, unnoticed white or red patches or sores anywhere in the mouth. You may also notice a sore or ulcer that does not heal for several weeks. Often times, it can be painless, and little in the way of physical changes may be obvious to the untrained eye. It can affect any area of the oral cavity including the lips, gum tissue, cheek lining, tongue, the hard or soft palate, and the throat. Anyone, of any age and ethnic background can have oral cancerous or pre-cancerous conditions.

Because there are many benign changes in your oral tissues and a simple bite on the inside of your cheek may mimic something more ominous, it is important to have any sore or discolored area of your mouth that does not heal within a month looked at by a professional. Regular dental check-ups with a visual exam of the entire mouth can detect oral cancer, but if you have concerns between appointments, please contact our office to schedule an oral cancer screening immediately.
