Implant Dentistry

Dental implants are the modern solution to missing teeth. A surgical procedure is done to place a dental implant within the jaw bone. This implant replaces the “root” of the pre existing tooth. After an appropriate time of healing, a crown is fastened to the implant using an abutment as the “connector” between the two. These three, the implant, abutment and crown are all necessary, to replace your tooth.

The major benefits of using dental implants are 1) to avoid cutting down abutment teeth necessary to make bridges, 2) possible root canal therapy of abutment teeth would be avoided, 3) the teeth can be replaced as individuals and not connected together as with a bridge, and 4) longevity; the life expectancy of a bridge is 10-12 years (depending on the number replacement teeth) whereas an implant is not susceptible to decay and is engineered to outlast a conventional bridge. Gum disease around both teeth and implants is still a concern capable of causing failure. However, with proper hygiene this is a very manageable risk. Overall implants enjoy a 94-98% success over 15 years.
