TMJ Treatments

“TMJ” stands for the temporomandibular joints, which are the small joints in front of each ear that attach your lower jaw to your skull. They allow you to open and close your mouth, chew, speak, and swallow. TMJ disorders can be caused by a variety of factors, including but not limited to major trauma such as an auto accident, teeth-clenching, or systemic joint disease like rheumatoid arthritis.
There are different types of TMJ problems that respond to a number of TMJ treatment methods, ranging from very conservative therapies to more aggressive approaches. Our multi-specialty dentist, Dr Wayne Kinney is highly skilled in TMJ treatments. Together we’ll work closely with you to determine the best course of TMJ treatment to alleviate your pain.
At our office, “conservative” is the key word when it comes to TMJ treatment. The most severe cases may require treatment with splints, mouth guards or other traditional forms of TMJ therapy, but most treatments for symptoms are simple and can be done at home, without the need for surgery. Some of the things we tell our patients suffering with TMJ dysfunction are:
- Avoid hard and chewy foods like bagels and steak.
- Avoid chewing gum.
- Learn relaxation techniques to help loosen the jaw and the rest of your body.
- Maintain good posture when sitting and standing.
- Relax your facial muscles throughout the day.
- Drink plenty of water and get ample sleep.
- Apply warm compresses on the face for twenty minutes daily.
- Use anti-inflammatory medications such as Motrin or Aleve.
- Keep your TMJ in a good position, with your teeth slightly apart and lips together. To maintain this position, keep your tongue at the top of the mouth and breathe through your nose.
